Meet the Team – Ant Tomlinson
Written by John Roberts
I first met Ant some time ago when he was heavily involved in the Nature for Health programme in and around the Dee Valley. I was especially interested in meeting him again as his current role managing public access in our National Landscape is closely aligned with my own interests and the reason I had volunteered with the AONB in the first place. We met at Loggerheads and this is how our conversation went:-
Tell me how it all started.
I’m a local boy and I’ve always lived and worked in the area. I was brought up and went to school in Colwyn Bay – my family has connections going back to farming on the Great Orme! When I was a teenager we moved to the Llangollen area where I still live with my partner Liz. I did think about carrying on with my education but, at the time, I was really keen to experience the world of work and that’s the route I took.
What happened next?
After some early trial and error I was fortunate to meet someone with a professional interest in the building industry and, in particular, the use of concrete in all its many forms. To cut a long story short, I eventually became expert in analysing the soil and ground conditions on sites earmarked for construction projects. Though still based locally, I travelled extensively and really enjoyed the sheer variety of the work and assessing the right concrete and materials to enable safe and secure development.
Not the usual background to working in conservation!
No – but there’s more! I always had a keen interest in motor vehicles and their maintenance. I moved on to having my own transport business for the delivery of concrete and other materials. This was also great experience and I enjoyed the combination of often working on my own but also meeting clients and developing the interpersonal skills which help me so much in my current role.
Was nature and the environment always important to you?
Yes, it was – and as you can imagine, my work made me realise just how much we need to do to make sure our natural heritage in properly protected. I came to a stage where I wanted to do something different in life that was closely related to the environment and nature. I was lucky enough to get the chance to work as a Ranger with the AONB team in Llangollen and it’s been a move I’ve never regretted.
What about the Nature for Health initiative?
After I’d started as a Ranger I had the opportunity to combine that work with supporting Nature for Health, working with my colleague, Becky. Our aim was to give people in the local community with health issues, but without the advantage of familiarity with the outdoors, the chance to improve their health and well-being with nature based activities. It has been both a great success and something which has given me great personal satisfaction. I’ve seen, at first hand, the benefits it brings to individuals and it’s certainly something that needs to be continued and extended.
What about your current role?
Again, this has been something I’ve loved doing. As a keen mountain biker I’ve always been conscious that our network of bridleways and footpaths need constant care and attention. Access to the countryside is a precious thing for all of us and it’s a privilege to work with rights of way colleagues in our local authorities to help keep our paths in good order. It’s a huge task, and human and financial resources are limited, but it’s vital that we do all we can to keep the network open and available. This goes back to what I said earlier about the benefits of the Nature for Health Programme – good access to the countryside is a positive for each and every one of us and must be maintained and improved. Our work with national and local trails, as well as the Community Miles, makes a great contribution to this.
What comes next for you?
I took on the access role to manage and deliver access improvement projects across Denbighshire, as well as sustainable recreation projects in the National Landscape. This also involved taking on some of Hannah’s responsibilities while she was on maternity leave. I’m now fully committed to this work and would love to continue to make my contribution for the foreseeable future. The future funding for rights of way improvement projects is uncertain at the moment. Hopefully Welsh Government will see the positive work delivered across Wales through the Access Improvement Grant and continue to fund it so that we can continue to deliver the benefits on the ground.
There are possible changes on the horizon too – how good it would be to see the Berwyn take its place as part of our designated landscape! – and I’m sure there will be new opportunities. I believe my interpersonal skills can be really helpful. My career in business has given me the confidence to engage with people in a constructive way – always an asset when rights of way are a cause for concern!
What about away from work?
Liz and I live in the countryside near Llangollen and our garden is always a priority. I still find time to mess about with vehicles too! One of my two grown up sons still lives nearby – the other is down in Gloucester – and we enjoy getting out on our bikes.
The usual final question, what’s your favourite spot in our National Landscape?
I’m really fond of Bryn Alyn – but if you really press me I’ll go for Bwlch y Groes overlooking the Dee Valley. No better spot for quiet contemplation!
Cwrdd â’r Tîm – Ant Tomlinson Wedi’i ysgrifennu gan John Roberts
Mi wnes i gyfarfod Ant am y tro cyntaf pan oeddwn i’m gwneud llawer o waith ar raglen Natur er budd Iechyd yn Nyffryn Dyfrdwy a’r cyffiniau. Roedd gen i ddiddordeb penodol mewn cyfarfod ag o eto gan ei fod yn rheoli mynediad cyhoeddus yn ein Tirwedd Cenedlaethol yn ei swydd ar hyn o bryd, sy’n rhywbeth mae gen i ddiddordeb ynddo, a dyna’r rheswm y gwnes i wirfoddoli gyda’r AHNE yn y lle cyntaf. Fe wnaethom gyfarfod yn Loggerheads a dyma sut aeth ein sgwrs:- Dweda sut cychwynnodd pethau Bachgen lleol ydw i ac rydw i wedi byw a gweithio yn yr ardal erioed. Cefais fy magu ac mi es i’r ysgol ym Mae Colwyn – mae gan fy nheulu hen gysylltiadau â ffermio ar y Gogarth! Pan oeddwn i yn fy arddegau, fe symudom ni i ardal Llangollen lle’r ydw i’n dal i fyw gyda fy mhartner, Liz. Mi feddyliais am aros mewn addysg ond, ar y pryd, roeddwn i’n awyddus iawn i brofi byd gwaith a dyna’r llwybr ddewisais i. Beth ddigwyddodd nesaf? Ar ôl cyfnod o symud rhwng gwahanol bethau, roeddwn i’n ffodus o gyfarfod â rhywun oedd â chysylltiad proffesiynol â’r diwydiant adeiladu ac, yn benodol, defnyddio concrid ar ei holl wahanol ffurfiau. Mewn byr eiriau, yn y pen draw, mi ddois i’n arbenigwr ar ddadansoddi’r pridd ac amodau’r ddaear ar safleoedd lle byddai prosiectau adeiladu’n cael eu gwneud. Er fy mod i’n dal i fyw’n lleol, roeddwn i’n teithio llawer ac fe wnes i wir fwynhau’r amrywiaeth oedd yn y gwaith ac asesu’r concrid a’r deunyddiau cywir i allu datblygu’n ddiogel. Nid y cefndir arferol i weithio ym maes cadwraeth! Na, ond nid dyna’r cyfan! Roedd gen i bob amser ddiddordeb mawr mewn cerbydau a’u cynnal a’u cadw. Fe es i ymlaen i redeg fy musnes cludiant fy hun yn danfon concrid a deunyddiau eraill. Roedd hwn yn brofiad arbennig hefyd ac roeddwn i’n mwynhau’r cyfuniad o weithio ar fy mhen fy hun yn aml a chyfarfod â chleientiaid hefyd, gan ddatblygu’r sgiliau trin pobl sydd o gymorth mawr i mi yn y swydd hon. Oedd natur a’r amgylchedd bob amser yn bwysig i ti? Oedd – ac fel y byddai rhywun yn dychmygu, roedd fy ngwaith yn gwneud i mi sylweddoli mor bwysig oedd hi i ni sicrhau bod ein treftadaeth naturiol yn cael ei gwarchod. Fe ddois i at bwynt lle’r oeddwn i eisiau gwneud rhywbeth gwahanol mewn bywyd ym maes yr amgylchedd a natur. Roeddwn i’n ddigon ffodus o gael cyfle i weithio fel Ceidwad gyda thîm yr AHNE yn Llangollen ac mae’n gam nad ydw i erioed wedi’i ddifaru. Beth am y fenter Natur er budd Iechyd? Ar ôl i mi gychwyn fel Ceidwad, cefais gyfle i gyfuno’r gwaith hwnnw â chefnogi Natur er budd Iechyd, gyda fy nghydweithiwr, Becky. Ein nod oedd rhoi cyfle i bobl yn y gymuned leol oedd â phroblemau iechyd, ond heb y fantais o fod yn gyfarwydd â’r awyr agored, i wella eu hiechyd a’u lles gyda gweithgareddau natur. Mae wedi bod yn llwyddiant ysgubol ac yn rhywbeth sydd wedi rhoi boddhad mawr i mi hefyd. Rydw i wedi gweld manteision hyn i unigolion gyda fy llygaid fy hun ac mae heb os yn rhywbeth mae angen parhau ag o a’i ehangu. Beth am dy swydd bresennol? Eto, rydw i wedi mwynhau gwneud hon yn fawr iawn. Fel beiciwr mynydd brwd, rydw i bob amser wedi bod yn ymwybodol bod ein rhwydwaith o lwybrau meirch a llwybrau cerdded angen gofal a sylw’n gyson. Mae mynediad i gefn gwlad yn beth gwerthfawr inni i gyd a braint yw gweithio gyda gweithwyr hwaliau tramwy eraill yn ein hawdurdodau lleol i helpu i gadw ein llwybrau mewn cyflwr da. Mae’n dasg enfawr, ac eithaf prin yw’r adnoddau dynol ac ariannol, ond mae’n hollbwysig ein bod ni’n gwneud popeth o fewn ein gallu i gadw’r rhwydwaith ar agor ac ar gael. Mae hyn yn mynd yn ôl at beth ddwedais i ynghynt am fanteision y Rhaglen Natur er budd Iechyd – mae digon o gyfleoedd i fynd i gefn gwlad yn beth da i bob un ohonom ac mae’n rhaid cynnal a gwella hynny. Mae ein gwaith gyda llwybrau cenedlaethol a lleol, yn ogystal â’r Milltiroedd Cymunedol, yn cyfrannu’n fawr at hyn. Beth sydd nesaf i ti? Fe gymerais i’r swydd mynediad i reoli a chyflawni prosiectau gwella mynediad ar draws Sir Ddinbych, yn ogystal â phrosiectau hamdden cynaliadwy yn y Tirwedd Cenedlaethol. Roedd hyn hefyd yn cynnwys ysgwyddo rhywfaint o gyfrifoldebau Hannah tra oedd hi ar famolaeth. Rwyf bellach wedi ymrwymo’n llawn i’r gwaith hwn a byddwn wrth fy modd yn parhau i wneud fy nghyfraniad yn y dyfodol. Mae ansicrwydd faint o gyllid fydd ar gael ar gyfer prosiectau gwella hawliau tramwy ar hyn o bryd. Gobeithio y bydd Llywodraeth Cymru’n gweld y gwaith cadarnhaol sy’n cael ei wneud ar hyd a lled Cymru drwy’r Grant Gwella Mynediad ac yn parhau i’w ariannu er mwyn i ni allu parhau i gyflawni’r manteision ar lawr gwlad. Mae newidiadau ar y gorwel o bosib’ hefyd – pa mor dda fyddai gweld y Berwyn yn hawlio ei le yn rhan o’n tirwedd ddynodedig? Rydw i’n siŵr y bydd cyfleoedd newydd eraill hefyd. Rydw i’n credu y gall fy sgiliau trin pobl i fod yn ddefnyddiol iawn. Mae fy ngyrfa mewn busnes wedi rhoi hyder i mi ymgysylltu â phobl mewn ffordd adeiladol – mae hynny bob tro’n ased pan mae hawliau tramwy’n peri pryder! A phan nad wyt ti yn y gwaith? Mae Liz a minnau’n byw yng nghefn gwlad ger Llangollen a’r ardd yw’r flaenoriaeth fwyaf bob tro. Rydw i’n dal i dreulio rhywfaint o amser yn mocha gyda cherbydau hefyd! Mae’r ddau fab wedi tyfu i fyny – un yn byw yn agos a’r llall draw yng Nghaerloyw – ac rydyn ni’n mwynhau mynd am dro ar ein beics. Y cwestiwn olaf arferol – beth yw dy hoff le yn ein Tirwedd Cenedlaethol? Dw i wrth fy modd efo Bryn Alun, ond os oes rhaid dewis, byddwn yn mynd am Fwlch y Groes yn edrych dros Ddyffryn Dyfrdwy. Does unlle gwell am eiliad o dawelwch!
