Regeneration Project Manager – Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal World Heritage Site
It’s been one year since I began the role of world heritage site co-ordinator for the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct & Canal World Heritage Site and it has been a year full of learning. Having recently moved back to North Wales I have delved into the world of World Heritage of course, but also the Clwydian Range Dee Valley National Landscape. Both designations celebrating and protecting this unique part of the world and its heritage, both cultural and natural.
Sitting at the heart of the National Landscape, the WHS recognises the Outstanding Universal Value of the 11‑mile canal and engineering brilliance of the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, beautifully framed by the scenery of the Dee Valley landscape.
The National Landscape is one of the key partners in managing the WHS. Since the site’s inscription in 2009, we have worked closely together to deliver shared ambitions and joint projects that strengthen and support each other’s work. A great example of this is the ‘Our Picturesque Landscape’ project, an ambitious, National Lottery‑funded initiative centred on the picturesque beauty of the Dee Valley and the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal WHS.
It explores the sublime qualities of landscape which has inspired artists, poets, engineers and writers to travel to the area for centuries. Which includes the intersection of built and natural heritage found through the presence of great engineering structures set in the valley landscape, from the Horseshoe falls, Chainbridge to the Pontcysyllte aqueduct itself. The project created new interpretation, improved access, restored important viewpoints and engaged communities – helping reconnect both residents and visitors with the history of the site and ensuring that is cared for into the future, as it continues to draw visitors from across the world.
The support and expertise of the National Landscape team are immensely valuable to the WHS — our partnership makes it possible to achieve much more together. This collaborative approach is set to continue. Upcoming joint work includes plans to invest in a recreation plan to unify visitor management across the 11‑mile WHS. This will strengthen coordination between partners and support a consistent, shared approach to caring for this internationally important site.

Mae blwyddyn wedi mynd heibio ers i mi ddechrau rôl cydlynydd safle treftadaeth y byd ar gyfer Safle Treftadaeth y Byd Traphont Ddŵr a Chamlas Pontcysyllte ac mae wedi bod yn flwyddyn lawn dysgu. Ar ôl symud yn ôl i Ogledd Cymru yn ddiweddar, rwyf wedi ymchwilio i fyd Treftadaeth y Byd wrth gwrs, ond hefyd Tirwedd Genedlaethol Dyffryn Dyfrdwy Bryniau Clwyd. Mae’r ddau ddynodiad yn dathlu ac yn amddiffyn y rhan unigryw hon o’r byd a’i threftadaeth, yn ddiwylliannol ac yn naturiol.
Wedi’i lleoli yng nghanol y Dirwedd Genedlaethol, mae’r Safle Treftadaeth y Byd yn cydnabod Gwerth Cyffredinol Eithriadol y gamlas 11 milltir a disgleirdeb peirianneg Traphont Ddŵr Pontcysyllte, wedi’i fframio’n hyfryd gan olygfeydd tirwedd Dyffryn Dyfrdwy.
Mae’r Dirwedd Genedlaethol yn un o’r partneriaid allweddol wrth reoli’r Safle Treftadaeth y Byd. Ers cofrestru’r safle yn 2009, rydym wedi cydweithio’n agos i gyflawni uchelgeisiau a rennir a phrosiectau ar y cyd sy’n cryfhau ac yn cefnogi gwaith ein gilydd. Enghraifft wych o hyn yw prosiect ‘Ein Tirwedd Ddarluniadwy’, menter uchelgeisiol, a ariennir gan y Loteri Genedlaethol, sy’n canolbwyntio ar harddwch darluniadwy Dyffryn Dyfrdwy a Thraphont Ddŵr a Chamlas Pontcysyllte.
Mae’n archwilio rhinweddau godidog y dirwedd sydd wedi ysbrydoli artistiaid, beirdd, peirianwyr ac awduron i deithio i’r ardal ers canrifoedd. Sy’n cynnwys croestoriad treftadaeth adeiledig a naturiol a geir trwy bresenoldeb strwythurau peirianneg gwych wedi’u gosod yn nhirwedd y dyffryn, o Raeadr y Bedol, Pont y Gadwyn i draphont ddŵr Pontcysyllte ei hun. Creodd y prosiect ddehongliad newydd, gwellodd fynediad, adferodd olygfannau pwysig ac ymgysylltodd â chymunedau – gan helpu i ailgysylltu trigolion ac ymwelwyr â hanes y safle a sicrhau ei fod yn cael ei ofalu amdano i’r dyfodol, wrth iddo barhau i ddenu ymwelwyr o bob cwr o’r byd.
Mae cefnogaeth ac arbenigedd tîm y Dirwedd Genedlaethol yn hynod werthfawr i’r WHS – mae ein partneriaeth yn ei gwneud hi’n bosibl cyflawni llawer mwy gyda’n gilydd. Mae’r dull cydweithredol hwn i fod i barhau. Mae gwaith ar y cyd sydd ar ddod yn cynnwys cynlluniau i fuddsoddi mewn cynllun hamdden i uno rheolaeth ymwelwyr ar draws y Safle Treftadaeth y Byd 11 milltir o hyd. Bydd hyn yn cryfhau cydgysylltu rhwng partneriaid ac yn cefnogi dull cyson, a rennir o ofalu am y safle pwysig rhyngwladol hwn.
