Peatlands

It’s Wales Climate Week! The National Landscape is working on a number of projects that help address climate change. Our peatlands are vital ecosystems, acting as significant carbon stores and havens for wildlife. However, much of the peat within the National Landscape is degraded and currently releasing carbon. This is often due to drainage, conifer trees, and erosion.

Working with landowners and farmers, we’re restoring these crucial habitats through funding from Natural Resources Wales’ (NRW) National Peatland Action Programme (NPAP).

We’ve made remarkable progress, especially at Llandegla Moor Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI)

  • Since 2022, approximately 180 hectares of peat habitats have been brought into a more favourable, recovering condition.
  • We installed contour bunds to hold water and block drains, preventing runoff.
  • We remove non-native conifer trees, which allows native plants to flourish.
  • These efforts stop carbon loss and protect the wetland habitats.
  • The improved habitat is already benefiting key species like Black Grouse, Curlew, Snipe, Dragonflies, and Adder.

Healthy peatlands are truly nature’s unsung heroes. They act as Carbon Powerhouses, storing vast amounts of carbon and preventing its release into the atmosphere, which helps Wales meet its climate change targets. Additionally, peatlands are Biodiversity Hotspots, providing unique habitats for a wide range of flora and fauna, and serve as Natural Water Regulators, absorbing and slowly releasing water like giant sponges, which reduces flood risks and ensures cleaner water supplies.

By investing in these projects, the National Landscape is securing a healthier environment for generations to come. Building on our successes, we have secured further NPAP funding to continue this ambitious work to restore degraded peatlands until 2028.

Mae ein mawndiroedd yn ecosystemau hanfodol, gan weithredu fel storfeydd carbon a hafanau sylweddol i fywyd gwyllt. Fodd bynnag, mae llawer o’r mawn o fewn y Dirwedd Genedlaethol wedi’i ddiraddio ac ar hyn o bryd yn rhyddhau carbon. Mae hyn yn aml oherwydd draenio, coed conwydd ac erydiad.

Gan weithio gyda thirfeddianwyr a ffermwyr, rydym yn adfer y cynefinoedd hanfodol hyn trwy gyllid gan Raglen Gweithredu Mawndiroedd Cenedlaethol (NPAP) Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru (CNC).

Rydym wedi gwneud cynnydd rhyfeddol, yn enwedig yn Safle o Ddiddordeb Gwyddonol Arbennig (SoDdGA) Rhos Llandegla.

Ers 2022, mae tua 180 hectar o gynefinoedd mawn wedi cael eu dwyn i gyflwr mwy ffafriol, sy’n adfer.
Gosodwyd byndiau cyfuchlin i ddal dŵr a blocio draeniau, gan atal dŵr ffo.
Rydym yn tynnu coed conwydd anfrodorol, sy’n caniatáu i blanhigion brodorol ffynnu.
Mae’r ymdrechion hyn yn atal colli carbon ac yn amddiffyn y cynefinoedd gwlyptir.
Mae’r cynefin gwell eisoes o fudd i rywogaethau allweddol fel y Grugiar Ddu, y Gylfinir, y Gwyaid, y Gweision Neidr, a’r Naber.

Mae mawndiroedd iach yn wir arwyr tawel natur. Maent yn gweithredu fel Pwerdai Carbon, gan storio symiau enfawr o garbon ac atal ei ryddhau i’r atmosffer, sy’n helpu Cymru i gyrraedd ei thargedau newid hinsawdd. Yn ogystal, mae mawndiroedd yn Fannau Poeth Bioamrywiaeth, gan ddarparu cynefinoedd unigryw ar gyfer ystod eang o fflora a ffawna, ac yn gwasanaethu fel Rheoleiddwyr Dŵr Naturiol, gan amsugno a rhyddhau dŵr yn araf fel sbyngau enfawr, sy’n lleihau risgiau llifogydd ac yn sicrhau cyflenwadau dŵr glanach.

Drwy fuddsoddi yn y prosiectau hyn, mae’r Dirwedd Genedlaethol yn sicrhau amgylchedd iachach i genedlaethau i ddod. Gan adeiladu ar ein llwyddiannau, rydym wedi sicrhau rhagor o gyllid NPAP i barhau â’r gwaith uchelgeisiol hwn i adfer mawndiroedd wedi’u diraddio tan 2028.
